Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

You know that ordeal when it’s been cold outside for so long, and you just almost give up hope that your bare legs will ever see the light of day again, and your mailbox is full of catalogs with bath-suiting-clad models who mock you and your frozen toes…and then the day finally comes when you’re suddenly uncomfortably warm in your pea-coat, and sun isn’t covered with that cloudy winter blanket, and you can smell Spring?

No?

Nevermind.

Just say no. Grazia recently released an article in which Isabel Marant divulges her take on the web’s new role in the fashion industry. Though I didn’t expect a positive or understanding reaction, I was not prepared for her intense negative response. “I don’t like the idea of being flooded with image and information. I don’t belong to the generation of spending time on the internet. I think it’s too fast and too fake.” Girl’s pissed people. Gretchen of Gretchen Blog speaks intelligently on the rights and wrongs in Marant’s argument.

There’s a flower on your skirt. Anyone who knows me knows I love a DIY. Thus this post on Out of Order naturally caught my attention. Minimal materials. Maximum cuteness.

Pin up. Fun fact: On prom day in high school, I used to go from house to house doing friends’ hair. “You should go to beauty school” was commonly thrown my way. Though I didn’t take the advice, my love of all things hair has stayed with me. Thus, I found  this Retro Chick’s post infinitely fascinating. Gemma, who was recently featured on our sister blog, demonstrates how to create the “victory roll-up do.” Bonus: she has the most delightful British accent.

You’ve Have Male. The Demoiselles served up a great post regarding Menswear and how this style — despite popular belief –  is not reserved for the female beanpole. #Love

Celeb Style: Audrina Patridge of The Hills’ Scarf Style

Audrina never fails to impress a crowd with an awesome fashion ensemble–this one is no exception!  When my eyes caught The Hills star’s urban-chic scarf , quite frankly it was hard to take them off.

If you’re interested in a similar look at an affordable price ($12.71), try the Paisley Square Scarf.  I actually prefer this version of the scarf over Audrina’s, because of its smaller and thus has more versatility to be worn both during the day and at night.  The Paisley Square Scarf comes in a gorgeous shade of plum, and  includes stripes of silver metallic thread – boho and glamorous all at once. The Uniform Project

Never underestimate the power of the accessory. Its power as a styling tool is boundless.

While perusing what is probably my favorite site, I found an amazing testament to my sentiment that style is not all about the clothes.

Meet Sheena Matheiken, co-creator of The Uniform Project, a initiative in which Sheena wears the same black dress for 365 days, and styles it a different way each day to raise money for educating Indian children for the organization Akanksha. Yes, the endeavor is charitable and philanthropic and she’s a great person… blah blah blah, but what really stands out to me here is the unprecedented level of fashion innovation she deplays every. single. day. Tights, statement jewelry and millinery and, of course, scarves become essential tools. See some scarftastic examples below.

1/4/2010:

In the long run this is obviously a massive money saver — in the battle between new scarf versus new dress, new scarf will nearly always win in terms of cost. So though I doubt I’d have the wherewithall to wear the same dress daily, I do plan to take a page from The Uniform Project’s accessories-dressing book. Et tu?

New Merch’ Monday: Chain Bobstay Scarf

grey nautical scarf

nautical irony

This scarf took a second look.  At first, I was unimpressed; I’m not a big fan of such literal prints.  But as soon as my boss said something about its nautical characteristics, I had to turn around and re-think my initial dismissal.

The pink chain print is just ironic enough to work for me.  The colors are great, because they’re both faded, and the simplicity of the combination keeps the scarf from looking too high-maintenance, too attention-grabbing.

werrk that literal print

Texture-wise, the Chain Bobstay will transition well from winter to Spring to summer, and back again, so there are a ton of opportunities to use this as a punch of pattern in your wardrobe.

[patternpunch]

I think what makes this scarf work is the irony.  Nautical irony, if you will, which I’m not sure existed before I started writing about this scarf, but I can assure you it exists now.

It’s no “nautical-themed pashmina afghan,” but it certainly has the same appeal, but in a more adaptable color scheme.  Call me crazy for integrating color into my wardrobe, but I can totally see this over a navy and white striped t-shirt, skinny jeans, and a green vintage jacket.

Yeah, green.  And it looks awesome inmymind.

What do we think?  Is the chain print workable?  I’m digging it.

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

Justin Beiber VMA green scarf peace sign white belt watch

More like Justin Adorable

March!  Hey, everyone, Spring’s almost here.  Thank. Goodness.  I am almost as excited about the arrival of warmer weather as I am about Land Rovers.

…That’s ridiculous.

But I am really excited about it.

So what’s happening?  I feel like this was a pretty uneventful week.  Other than my discovery of everyone’s new favorite chipmunk, Justin Bieber (I actually just typed “Beaver,” as I can’t get past saying his name like that), nothing was all that monumental.

Wook at the widdle guy.  He’s saying, “Let’s go skateboarding and talk about stuff that’s awesome.”  That’s what he’s saying.

I did come across the most recent Urban Outfitters catalogue, which was life-changing, though that is expected.  It turns out, they’re actually starting a bridal line soon.

Should be interesting, considering wedding dresses are usually, like…fancy.  BUT I’m excited for their take on “bridal.”  Their take on “catalogue” and “fashion photography” blew me away, so I am certain I will love whatever they show.

Speaking of shows, there are more than a few designers who push some crazy stuff down the runway, and Gareth Pugh is very much one of the pushers.  However, his ready-to-wear collection for Fall 2010 contained some pieces that are almost ready-to-wear, which is something that was certainly not foreseen.

For example, how do you feel about a leather scarf?  Practical and totally comfortable-looking, no?  Hey, thanks, Pugh.  I think I’m just gonna stick with cotton.  And pashmina.  I’m just gonna stick with that.

“Stick.”  Stick reminds me of cling, which reminds me of a reeeally ballin’ outfit I saw this week.  Rihanna. Is. Daring. It’s like the greatest hodgepodge of current  trends I’ve ever seen.  Turquoise, strong shoulders, jumpsuit, skinny leg, and flying squirrel wings.  I don’t know how they did it.  But they have achieved FASHION GOLD.

Or fashion turquoise.  Whatever.  It’s Rihanna.

So a friend was telling me they were tagged as someone who wasn’t them on facebook recently.  And that’s not a big deal if the person you were confused with is, you know, attractive.  Turns out, that happens with Lady Gaga, too.  I wonder if she knows Paris Hilton has been stealing her clothes and having Gaga/Bryanboy dress-up time.  In a bikini.  Outside.  I hate Californians.

BYTHEWAYLOOKATTHIS. Peace!

Spring and Summer Scarves

Let’s give a big welcome to Ina from My Vogue, a fantastic website that reviews affordable clothing and gives you great tips for putting together that perfect outfit. In this post she gives us her take on wearing scarves in the warmer months – don’t worry, you don’t have to leave your favorite accessory behind!

Have you always thought about scarves as winter accessories only? Well, let me tell you, there is no need to put your stylish scarves away once the cold months are over. Believe it or not, with a little imagination, you can wear your favorite fashion accessory all year round, even during the hot summer. Of course, I am not saying to wrap yourself into a thick knitted shawl when it is 100 degrees outside! Instead, there are beautiful pieces made of cotton, silk, or other light material. The Affordable Scarves boutique has a very nice “summer collection.” Once you pick your favorite scarf from there, go ahead and read these top 5 tips on how to wear it during hot months:

  1. Be stylish – name the most sophisticated and classy fashion accessory??? A scarf! Seriously, that is an absolute necessity in every business look – a silk scarf completing an elegant suit, that’s classy. A cotton scarf matched with a casual outfit will make it fashionable and stylish.
  2. Be creative – a scarf is not only a “neck accessory.” That’s right – why not use it as a kerchief or a belt? My favorite pool outfit in the summer is a light dress, flip flops, sunglasses, and a scarf wrapped around the head – it looks funky and different, plus it protects the hair from the strong sun. Try it out this season – it’s really fun! Accessorizing a linen dress with a scarf instead of heavy leather belt is also a very smart move – it looks much more gentle and feminine. Plus, this way the outfit will be very interesting every time you put on a different scarf.
  3. Be sophisticated - matching colors when creating a fashionable look is very important. For example, I always try to match shoes + purse + belt. Sometimes it’s not possible, though. No matter how hard I looked, I just couldn’t find the same pink suede handbag as the fabulous Italian pumps I bought an year ago. Instead I found the same color scarf! So my way of being sophisticated when I want to wear those suede heels is to combine them with my favorite pink linen scarf and black purse.
  4. Be fashionable - all these different trends every year are a little overwhelming, aren’t they? Not everybody can afford to buy new sets of clothes every season just to be up on the latest fashion. It is much easier and cheaper to buy one or two trendy scarves. Keep in mind at the Affordable Scarves online store you will find all the fashion trends – animal prints, florals, embellishments, metallics, stripes, etc. What else do you need to call yourself a fashionista?
  5. Be comfy and warm – no, I didn’t forget Iwas talking about summer months. However, even in the hottest months I am freezing in the office, at malls, and in all kinds of enclosed areas where the air conditioner is set on 55 degrees when outside it is 90 – you know that’s not healthy at all, right? And in states like Texas where the summer is unbearably hot, most of the time we are inside (unless we’re in the pool) so I always like to have something cozy to keep me warm. Why not a light sweater or a beautiful trendy scarf???
Being fashionable or having your own unique style is not hard at all – even one little thing like wearing a cute scarf during the spring/summer season can accomplish that!
My favorite light pieces from Affordable Scarves are:

And because I wanted to show you how beautiful and sophisticated it can look to combine scarves with spring/summer clothes, I matched two outfits on looklet.com.

Thanks, Ina, for giving us some great ideas on how to wear scarves all year long! To check out some of our latest warm-weather accessories, be sure to visit the Affordable Scarves Spring and Summer pages!

2010 Olympics Figure Skating Fashion, The Scarves they Should Have Worn

Sports-fanatic or not, it’s likely you tuned in to this year’s Winter Olympic games. Being a member of the latter group (my total apathy for sports is astounding), my interest in the event was peeked primarily by those games with some level of sartorial-stimulation.

Enter figure skating.

I was very much the girly-girl type of kid, and I’m still arrosed by a healthy dose little glitter and chiffon. In other words, I’d totally rock those saweet brightly-colored mini dresses with nude mesh cut-outs if it were socially accpetable. Can I get an Amen? …Anyone?

Anyway, watching these swan-like creatures perform throughout the past couple of weeks gave me the idea that their tiny ensembles needed something. What more fitting accessory is there for this chilli-weather sport than the scarf?

FIGURE-SKATING/pink cotton scarfU.S. skater Johnny Weir looks like a naughty Ken doll, or Ken’s flamboyant evil twin, perhaps? Either way, this strategetricly sliced bodysuit would look great with an extra touch of pink, no?

Estonia Figure Skatingbrown plaid scarfAdhering to this idea of theme dressing, Italy’s Samuel Contesti’s assessorization could use a leetle more county flair. If farm life and Olympic figure skating don’t go hand in hand, then I don’t know what does. ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

Sticking with metallic touches, blue hues and ruffly flair, the scarf at right would put put the blue in red, white and blue. Oh, they’re from China? Just go with it.
