Soccer Scarves: The Ultimate Accessory

Liverpool fans hold up soccer scarvesI’m spending this summer in South Africa. Yep, that’s right. Until July 11th, my roommates and I will be absorbed in a sea of painted faces, animated cheers and sweaty soccer (or should I say, football?) players.

Now I know I’m not the only one who has caught World Cup fever. I also know I’m not the only one wondering about the scarves footie fans love to wear. There’s no better way to show your love for your favorite team (go Italia!) than with a scarf sporting your country’s colors. But where did this phenomenon come from? The answer: Great Britain.

Team scarves first appeared in Britain in the early 1900s. They were designed to allow fans to stay warm in the winter without sacrificing their team spirit. The original soccer scarves were striped, alternating the team’s colors. This style is still the most popular in the UK and Australia. Then came the addition of the club crest and team name, followed by scarves decorated with team slogans and pictures of popular players. Now the possibilities are endless. Scarves are made for important matches, championships and rivalries.

Whether it’s winter or summer, whether the match is in Europe or Africa, scarves are essential for any soccer fan. The ultimate accessory, they are not just for function and fashion. Scarves have become a part of pre-game tradition. Fans will raise their scarves above their heads, creating a scarf wall and a sea of their club’s colors, while singing their team’s anthem. USA fans, this makes you want to put down your foam finger and get an American scarf, doesn’t it?

What team are you rooting for this year? And tell the truth, did you make your choice based on which team has the best scarves?

Bulky or Thin? The Summer Scarf Dilemma!

Everyone has seen the new scarf trend…go big, go bulky, go thin or go home. Period. Scarves are the “it girl” of the year. They’re fun and fashionable! But for summer?! Is it too much?

This is a topic that I have seriously contemplated because I love me some scarves! But, during the summer? So I have taken the time to research, note and watch any fashion medium I could get my hands on…and I have concluded…That scarves really are right for all seasons.

Here’s why…they add flare! They are the most universal accessory, wear them in your hair, around your waist, around your neck…however you choose…but by wearing a scarf, in whatever unique way you desire, you add a touch of flare. A scarf as your headband…different..stands out more than a normal headband?…Can we say, flare?!

But here’s the ultimate question…how much flare is too much? Do we need to rock the bulky scarves? Or is thin in?

My conclusion…Stay versatile, rock both!

The bigger, the more coverage, the more it stands out. The smaller, the less coverage, the more discrete. Granted, color and pattern do make a huge difference, but size makes or breaks your look.

Miami Cotton Scarf

Bulky

If you’re going to go big, then do be wary of your scarf taking over your look. You want it to compliment your outfit, not take away from it.

Abby Striped Scarf

Thin

If you go thin, then make sure your scarf has purpose! Go with a bright color or unique pattern. Make it stand out, make people say, “Wow that’s a cute scarf!” …not, “Why is she wearing a scarf?”

Regardless of going bulky or thin, scarves are in! No matter the season, they add a little extra omph to every outfit! Try it!

New Merch’ Monday: Madison Print Scarf

white floral scarf

Color me re-enchanted.

Despite the thousands of variations, there usually isn’t much interest piqued by floral prints.  Maybe that there are so many options and a never-ending supply of them is the reason we’re disenchanted by the idea of floral prints.

Whether it’s the color combinations or the print itself, the Madison Print Scarf has caught my eye.  A floral scarf that isn’t so “floral-y,” the Madison is a nice break from the super-girly stereotype associated with flowers.

The mixing of a vintage-looking print with cool, current color combinations and an understated check pattern is what makes this lightweight scarf unique.

Plus, the tiny fringe at the ends is a point of interest.  It’s under an inch long, giving a low-key vibe by having the unfinished look of fringe, but not complicating the check/flower pattern by being too much.

blue floral scarf

checkered/floral :: rad/awesome

Lightweight enough to be worn through the summer months, the Madison Print Scarf will also transition well to the colder months, due to its size.  Its dimensions aren’t worthy of sarong status, but at six-and-a-half feet long and nearly three feet wide, it is certainly a good sized scarf.

If you’re not big on too-girly accessories, but want to give the floral thing a try, give the Madison a shot.  Even when you tell someone what your new, checkered scarf (that just happens to have some rad flowers on it) is called, you still don’t have to say “floral.”  You’re welcome.

Wanna look Parisian? Get a scarf.

At the beginning of May, I was frantically packing for my trip to France. (which started the next day) I had made lists of what I needed and I thought I had everything that is commonly forgotten: toothbrush, camera, socks….you get it. However, there was something I did manage to forget; in fact, my friends seemed to forget this very important article of clothing as well. The fabric that instantly transforms you into a Parisian. SCARVES!

That’s right! None of us remembered to pack a scarf. Not only were we cold everywhere we went, but we stuck out like sore thumbs. I swear to you that everyone except us was wearing a scarf. Good thing we were in the mecca of the fashion world – Paris. So what did we buy first? Scarves. And everyone in our group continued to collect scarves until we made it home. And once we put on our scarves, we instantly looked french.. of course! (okay, not really, but we felt like it)

no scarves in France

There we are on our first night with no scarves. Very sad, no? We were also without hair straighteners, as you can tell, but that’s a whole different fight to battle. This was the time we realized we were going to need to go shopping (In Paris. Bummer, right?) to get scarves.

France scarves

So here we are with our scarves. Of course, we looked tres chic once we had the scarves. Even the scarf on purse look is rockin’.

Even this guy said we looked french. And he was legit. Do you think it was the scarves? Anyway, my moral of the story is that if everyone in France wears scarves, then you probably should too. After all, it is the fashion capital.

Rocking the Scarf

Call me crazy, but I love Aerosmith. More specifically, I love their larger-than-life frontman, Steven Tyler. You know, dude looks like a lady? He knows how to rock, he’s Liv Tyler’s father and he doesn’t take the stage without his iconic scarf-tied microphone stand.

Steven Tyler ties a scarf to his mic stand

Mr. Tyler has been using his trademarked mic since well before I was born, but where did he get such a genius idea? As it turns out, in the early Aerosmith days, he had a favorite scarf he would always wear in his hair. When it started to get worn out (literally) he couldn’t part with his favorite accessory. His solution? Tie it to his microphone stand. And there you have it, ladies and gentleman, the scarf mic stand was born. Sounds like a great decorative use for an old scarf, doesn’t it?

This look has even inspired other artists to put their personality into their microphones. Mariah Carey is all about the glitter mic while Rihanna likes her microphones a little more medieval.

Who knew a scarf could change the face of rock ‘n roll?

Celeb Style: Mandy Moore’s Tie-Dye Scarf

Remember when Mandy Moore came out in the ’90s? You know… So Real, Candy, I Wanna Be With You… Everyone loved her. Then she was in A Walk to Remember, the movie that broke my 12-year-old heart. Later she dated Andy Roddick and Zach Braff, which kind of makes me jealous. Her newest album, Amanda Leigh, was released in 2009. Did anyone get it? I didn’t, but I think it’s definitely worth a listen. The girl has got some pipes. In addition to her acting and singing career, Mandy used to have her own fashion line, Mblem. Though that line stopped, Mandy says she would like to get back into the fashion world and I’m sure she will. I recently came across this picture…

Mandy Moore scarf

..and I happen to think she is clutching that scarf for a reason. Who would want it to get away? I love tie-dye. It makes her look free spirited, but not quite like some peace-lovin’-hippie. (not that there is anything wrong with being peace lovin’ or a hippie) I’m not sure where Mandy got her scarf or how much she paid for it, but I know where to get one that is similar for a price that I can almost guarantee is less.

Emelia tie-dye scarf Affordable ScarvesThe Emelia Tie-Dye Scarf is 100% cotton, making it lightweight and a perfect option for summer. It’ll give you that free-spirited look Mandy has with less of the cost. This scarf comes in four different color combinations and is easy to pair with outfits. This treasure could be yours for just $15.26 and then you will be sure to clutch your scarf the way Mandy is, but I won’t judge.
