If you are reading this, chances are you probably wear scarves already. But do you remember the turning point – the moment when you decided you wanted to become a scarf wearer? This is extremely relevant to me, because I recently experienced a friend’s ‘I can be a scarf person’ moment. Here’s how it went down. We were shopping and Emily picked up a scarf…

mle: Do you think I’d look good in this?

me: Of course. Why not?

mle: Well I’m not really a scarf person. Do you think I could be a scarf person?

me: I think anyone is a scarf person.

She then picked up the scarf and started to walk to shop around for more when I told her…

me: If you’re going to become a scarf person, you might as well start with two.

And, so it began. Emily bought her scarves and is now a ‘scarf person.’ And you know what’s great about being a scarf wearer? It’s always a good time to wear a scarf! Regardless of the season or outfit, a scarf is always an acceptable accessory. So scarf wearers, embrace your coolness. And encourage your friends to become scarf wearers also; they’ll thank you later.

What do you all think of guys wearing scarves? I know it’s a touchy subject that brings about many heated debates. We’ve already touched on the surface a little bit, when B posted this blog about why her boyfriend wouldn’t wear a scarf. So here’s my take on dudes in scarves.

In the winter, it’s always okay. They are completely necessary. Guys’ necks get just as cold as ours and they should definitely not be too much of a manly man to accept that fact. But they are? Why? Well, the world may never know.

But, there are some men that aren’t too scared to wear a winter scarf, and really not too scared to wear any scarf. These are those hipster dudes you see at Barnes and Noble, sippin’ a latte and reading Kerouac. These are the guys I befriend and these are the guys that I would date. (If they are straight, of course) Idk what it is with these hipster dudes, but they aren’t afraid to wear anything and when I see them in a scarf, I kind of like it.

But if I were to see this sports fan man’s man in a scarf, I am not quite sure what I would think. It just wouldn’t look right. So I suppose, when it comes to men in scarves, it depends on the man and it depends on the scarf. What do you think?

Back to school sections are out in stores, it’s time for me to buy my books and I even got stuck behind a school bus the other day! How was everyone’s first week of August? It wouldn’t be complete without an Affordable Scarves’ weekly roundup…right? Right.

Did anyone see John Mayer’s YouTube vid mocking Lebron James. I know, I know, we haven’t gotten enough Lebron James information lately, have we? It’s funny though, promise.

I learned to knit in the fall two years ago. I started a scarf and had the goal of finishing it in time for Christmas. I still haven’t completed the scarf. Due to my experience and expertise, I decided to give you some hints on knitting. That’s a joke…the expertise part, but I seriously do have some advice.

Don’t be a perfectionist. If you’re new to knitting, it probably won’t be perfect. Your rows might not line up perfectly, but that doesn’t mean each time a row doesn’t look perfect you should undo and redo it. That’s what I did and you see how quickly I made progress. In the grand scheme of things, once a scarf (or whatever you’re making) is finished, that missed stitch really won’t be too distracting.

Don’t make unrealistic goals. Here I was starting my scarf in the fall and saying it would be done by Christmas. I abandoned all hope on the scarf when I didn’t finish it in the allotted time I’d given myself. My goal should have been to simply finish the scarf, not to finish it by a certain date.

However, I’m not a knitting professional, so I sought advice from someone who is. Donna from Random Knits also has some advice for beginners.

Here it is:

My recommendation to new knitters is always to buy the best quality yarn and tools you can afford. Especially if you’re knitting scarves, because it’s so much nicer to have something soft and luscious against your neck!

Another tip to keep the edges of your scarf neat is to slip the first stitch of every row without knitting it – it makes a lovely straight edge!

But she decided to quit shopping for a month and do a 30 for 30. She was going to remix the same 30 articles of clothing for 30 days to make different outfits. It’s rather inspiring.

Do you send out a lot of e-mails? If so, then you should probably know about the worst e-mail habits or annoyances you should avoid such as the automatic “sent from my iPhone” message or writing “Cheers!” at the end of an e-mail.
