Celeb Style: Rachel Bilson’s Floral Scarf

Rachel Bilson Floral ScarfWhen she’s not busy acting or dating Hollywood hunks, my guess is that Rachel Bilson is out scarf-hunting. It seems as though every time you turn around this budding actress is dressed to impress with a gorgeous scarf wrapped around her neck. According to Elise from Rachel Bilson Daily, Rachel “can always make a normally boring outfit more exciting with one of her many scarfs!”

My high school obsession – Seth & Summer (more specifically Seth. I mean seriously, he’s adorable!). My college obsession – Rachel’s scarf collection.

Recently I stumbled across this photo and I must admit I was immediately smitten with this scarf. It’s lightweight and perfect for summer (or should I say Summer?). Plus the floral print is fun and refreshing. I had to have it. But because my bank statement isn’t exactly up to par with those of the Newport community, I was on a quest for an affordable alternative. Thank goodness for the Lindsay Rose Scarf. Now I can daydream about Seth Cohen all day long while sporting this fun and flirty look.

Scarves: Before The Fashion

A long, long time ago. In a galaxy far, far, away scarves were about more than just making a fashion statement and keeping you warm on those chilly winter nights. Back in the day, and I mean way back in the day, scarves were used for entirely different reasons. What are those reasons? you may ask. Well, let me tell you…

Queen Nefertiti ScarfAncient Egypt

For the Egyptians, scarves were seen as a symbol of social status. Queen Nefertiti is one of the first people said to have worn a scarf. She wore hers underneath her headdress.

Ancient China

Sculptures of Chinese warriors dating back to 1000 B.C. have been discovered, wearing scarves. Around 230 B.C., Chinese Empreror Cheng was said to have issued cloth scarves to his warriors as a symbol of their rank.

Ancient Rome

A linen cloth, known as sudarium, was used in the Roman Empire to wipe your face and neck after exercise. The name is Latin for sweat cloth, and these cloths soon became a popular fashion accessory for men and were worn around the neck, over the should, or tied to a belt.

18th Century Cravat17th Century Croatia

Similar to Chinese warriors, Croatian soldiers wore scarves that designated their rank in the army. Soldiers wore cotton scarves while the scarves worn by officers were made of silk.

18th Century France

The French referred to their scarves as cravats, from the Croatian word cravat. The color of the cravat was a symbol of where an individuals political loyalty laid.

How did the scarf go from an 18th century political symbol to a 21st century fashion necessity? Our timeline has the answers for you!

Celeb Style: Kim Kardashian

Whether she’s modeling, acting or dancing with the stars, it’s undeniable that Kim Kardashian always looks good. She always seems to choose the right accessories (especially scarves) to compliment an outfit. Our friends at KimKardashianWeb believe that “this demonstrates her interest and enthusiasm for fashion because every little thing down to the accessories seems like important and deciding element of what Kim chooses to wear… Kim’s fashion sense portrays the modern, fashion forward business woman and for the right occasion. She certainly embraces a glamorous aspect in her style, in an elegant and often striking way.” Women across America are constantly trying to copy her style but keeping up with the Kardashians isn’t an easy feat. Until now…

Staff Review: Cheater Crinkle Scarf

Not making it out to the ocean this summer? That’s okay, our Cheater Crinkle Scarf will put your mind there. Or if you are making it there, then you’ll probably want this scarf…

Cheater Crinkle Scarf from Affordable Scarves The oceanic shades of this scarf will have you dreaming of the beach. And I can vouch (seeing as how I just went to admire this beauty in person) that the picture doesn’t even do justice to the colors of this scarf. Not even the best photo in the world would be able to. The colors blend perfectly into each other and the crinkled look just makes this scarf seem more carefree and beachy.

This scarf is soft and extremely lightweight. It’s perfect for taking anywhere these hot summer months. And just think about it, you’d be taking the ocean with you. I mean, not for real, but you might as well be. I think that’s why they call this scarf the Cheater.

Now, I would never ever recommend snuggling up to a cheater, ladies, but with this scarf, I think we can make a small exception.

Jennifer Aniston’s Solid Pashmina

Whether it’s her hair, her love life or her supposed pregnancy, America loves to talk about Jennifer Aniston. The one aspect of her life that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough? Her style.

Jennifer Aniston's solid pashmina

Ms. Aniston is not one to make a scene in an outlandish outfit, instead she opts for a look that’s classic and classy.  Even in jeans and a t-shirt, she looks well put together. Looks like she learned a thing or two from fashionista, Rachel Green. Her style is one that every woman should emulate and now you can!

With that added pop of color from a beautiful pashmina who knows whose eye you’ll catch. Maybe Brad Pitt, or Tate Donovan, or Vince Vaughn, or John Mayer or…

Staff Review: Amy Nautical Square Scarf

nautical silk scarf from Affordable ScarvesA couple months ago, I was choosing scarves for a blog I was writing, about different ways to wear a head scarf. When we got to the warehouse, one of the scarves I had chosen was gone! Man, those things sell like hotcakes. And trust me, my waitressing job establishes me as a credible source in the speed of hotcake sales. So anyway, it was gone and the Amy was suggested. I had seen this scarf in our collection, but never really thought twice about it. It didn’t seem appealing. That is, until I pulled it out of the bag. This scarf is really awesome. Here are some reasons.

1. It’s silk. Silk=elegance. So you could dress it up or down.

2. It looks great worn a number of ways…a head wrap, belt, normal scarf, tie it to your purse…the possibilities are endless!

3. Nautical theme: I kind of have an affinity for all things nautical.

4. The colors are gorgeous!

This scarf is really one of those things that you don’t realize how much you love it until you get to hold it in your hands. And once you do, I promise that you’ll never want to break up with this scarf. Worth it.

Wanna look Parisian? Get a scarf.

At the beginning of May, I was frantically packing for my trip to France. (which started the next day) I had made lists of what I needed and I thought I had everything that is commonly forgotten: toothbrush, camera, socks….you get it. However, there was something I did manage to forget; in fact, my friends seemed to forget this very important article of clothing as well. The fabric that instantly transforms you into a Parisian. SCARVES!

That’s right! None of us remembered to pack a scarf. Not only were we cold everywhere we went, but we stuck out like sore thumbs. I swear to you that everyone except us was wearing a scarf. Good thing we were in the mecca of the fashion world – Paris. So what did we buy first? Scarves. And everyone in our group continued to collect scarves until we made it home. And once we put on our scarves, we instantly looked french.. of course! (okay, not really, but we felt like it)

no scarves in France

There we are on our first night with no scarves. Very sad, no? We were also without hair straighteners, as you can tell, but that’s a whole different fight to battle. This was the time we realized we were going to need to go shopping (In Paris. Bummer, right?) to get scarves.

France scarves

So here we are with our scarves. Of course, we looked tres chic once we had the scarves. Even the scarf on purse look is rockin’.

Even this guy said we looked french. And he was legit. Do you think it was the scarves? Anyway, my moral of the story is that if everyone in France wears scarves, then you probably should too. After all, it is the fashion capital.
