Staff Review: Amy Nautical Square Scarf

nautical silk scarf from Affordable ScarvesA couple months ago, I was choosing scarves for a blog I was writing, about different ways to wear a head scarf. When we got to the warehouse, one of the scarves I had chosen was gone! Man, those things sell like hotcakes. And trust me, my waitressing job establishes me as a credible source in the speed of hotcake sales. So anyway, it was gone and the Amy was suggested. I had seen this scarf in our collection, but never really thought twice about it. It didn’t seem appealing. That is, until I pulled it out of the bag. This scarf is really awesome. Here are some reasons.

1. It’s silk. Silk=elegance. So you could dress it up or down.

2. It looks great worn a number of ways…a head wrap, belt, normal scarf, tie it to your purse…the possibilities are endless!

3. Nautical theme: I kind of have an affinity for all things nautical.

4. The colors are gorgeous!

This scarf is really one of those things that you don’t realize how much you love it until you get to hold it in your hands. And once you do, I promise that you’ll never want to break up with this scarf. Worth it.

Wanna look Parisian? Get a scarf.

At the beginning of May, I was frantically packing for my trip to France. (which started the next day) I had made lists of what I needed and I thought I had everything that is commonly forgotten: toothbrush, camera, socks….you get it. However, there was something I did manage to forget; in fact, my friends seemed to forget this very important article of clothing as well. The fabric that instantly transforms you into a Parisian. SCARVES!

That’s right! None of us remembered to pack a scarf. Not only were we cold everywhere we went, but we stuck out like sore thumbs. I swear to you that everyone except us was wearing a scarf. Good thing we were in the mecca of the fashion world – Paris. So what did we buy first? Scarves. And everyone in our group continued to collect scarves until we made it home. And once we put on our scarves, we instantly looked french.. of course! (okay, not really, but we felt like it)

no scarves in France

There we are on our first night with no scarves. Very sad, no? We were also without hair straighteners, as you can tell, but that’s a whole different fight to battle. This was the time we realized we were going to need to go shopping (In Paris. Bummer, right?) to get scarves.

France scarves

So here we are with our scarves. Of course, we looked tres chic once we had the scarves. Even the scarf on purse look is rockin’.

Even this guy said we looked french. And he was legit. Do you think it was the scarves? Anyway, my moral of the story is that if everyone in France wears scarves, then you probably should too. After all, it is the fashion capital.

Rocking the Scarf

Call me crazy, but I love Aerosmith. More specifically, I love their larger-than-life frontman, Steven Tyler. You know, dude looks like a lady? He knows how to rock, he’s Liv Tyler’s father and he doesn’t take the stage without his iconic scarf-tied microphone stand.

Steven Tyler ties a scarf to his mic stand

Mr. Tyler has been using his trademarked mic since well before I was born, but where did he get such a genius idea? As it turns out, in the early Aerosmith days, he had a favorite scarf he would always wear in his hair. When it started to get worn out (literally) he couldn’t part with his favorite accessory. His solution? Tie it to his microphone stand. And there you have it, ladies and gentleman, the scarf mic stand was born. Sounds like a great decorative use for an old scarf, doesn’t it?

This look has even inspired other artists to put their personality into their microphones. Mariah Carey is all about the glitter mic while Rihanna likes her microphones a little more medieval.

Who knew a scarf could change the face of rock ‘n roll?

Accessorizing for Summer

♫    Summer time, and the livin’s easy    ♫

summer accessories

The sun is shining, the heat is beating on our backs, the pool is open and summer is here. That means it’s time for windows rolled down and music turned up, cooking out and ice cream! Some summer staples in wardrobes are sun dresses, shorts and sandals. But what about accessories? Accessorizing in the summer is very important so here are some tips.

Dress up those dresses. Try pairing a bright cardigan with your favorite dresses. Or maybe try a skinny belt over it. You could even try pairing your dress with some opaque tights. Get funky. There are so many ways you can accessorize a simple dress and make it look completely different than the last time you wore it.

Jewelry. Try lots of silvers and golds. They go great with summer clothes and tan skin. Bright colors work too. Try bangles or long necklaces. Don’t be scared to be bold. That’s what summer is all about.

Scarves that breathe are a great accessory to a summer outfit. They look good with t-shirts, tanks and dresses meaning you can throw one onto just about any outfit.

Don’t forget sunglasses. Not only do they make you look cool, but they are protecting your eyes from the serious harm that the sun can do.

Bright handbags are perfect for summer. Make sure you go for oversized. That way you can fit all your summer essentials into it!

Live it up! Summer is all about being free spirited. Don’t be afraid to try new styles or to pair certain things together to make an outfit. Just look for light materials so you won’t be uncomfortable.

Selena Gomez’s Scarf is Magic, You Know.

You’ve seen her on the Disney Channel starring on Wizards of Waverly Place (maybe, if you watch Disney… of course, I never always do…) and you have probably heard her on the radio, but have you seen her in this scarf?

Selena Gomez in scarf

Even if you aren’t a Disney Channel enthusiast, I’m sure you’ve heard of Selena Gomez and seen her (and her style) making her way into celebrity news. I love that scarf on her and I wonder where she got it. I’m sure it wouldn’t fit into my college student budget anyway, but the Isabelle Ombre Scarf is very similar. This scarf is on sale for $10.46 and you can get it in purple, orange or green.

Affordable Scarves' Isabelle Ombre Scarf This scarf is soft, light and airy, making it perfect for spring, summer or fall! It’s 100% cotton, meaning this isn’t one of those itchy neck scarves! As Selena would say, everything is not what it seems, but this scarf is. It’s really that great!

What Scarf Material Makes You Swoon?

When I wear a scarf, I want to be comfortable.  I don’t want a scratchy, heavy and hot scarf draping around my neck while I’m trying to look my best.  If it’s scratchy, my neck gets red and itches. If it’s heavy, I feel like I’m choking. If it’s hot, I’m sweating like a pig!

I just want to be comfortable and rock the cute new embellished scarves everyone is raving about! So I took it upon myself, assuming I’m not the only person out there that loves to wear scarves without the pain, to determine the most COMFORTABLE and affordable fabrics roaming the streets…

  • 100% Jersey – You know, the comfy cotton!? This stretchy and baby-soft cotton is very breathable and light.  Now it’s not the lightest or the most breathable, but very comfortable. When embellished, this style of scarf stands out without resulting in an itchy neck!

    100% Jersey

  • Cashmere – Oh, the infamous, ritzy word…cashmere…just sounds elegant doesn’t it? This fabric, my friends, is by far the most lightweight and breathable I’ve found.  It gets softer with time and doesn’t weigh you down.  Expensive it may be, but worthy of ownership, indeed!

Cashmere

  • Silk – Ah, silk! Very smooth, soft, velvety… not quite cashmere (in my standards), but still an elegant choice of material.  If you’re purchasing an embellished silk scarf, though, be careful of tearing!

Silk

  • Cotton – The classic cotton! A thinner material, lightweight and breathable. This is the more common scarf material. It can get warm, but unless you have an allergy, an itchy neck should not be in your future. This material will wear but generally holds embellishments well.

Cotton

  • Linen– This cloth fabric is extremely lightweight! This plant-like material is considered to be the most breathable fabric, promoted for its coolness.  But do consider the type of embellishment – sequins are generally safe; anything heavier, watch for tears.

Linen

Over all, my general rating? Go with 100% Jersey Cotton. If you want an embellished, playful scarf, be comfortable! Don’t forgo comfort for class…be unique without worrying about your accessories!

5 Ways to Wear a Head Scarf

Are you looking for some new ways to style your hair? Well then head scarves are for you. There are so many different ways to wear a head scarf. You can go for a funky, fun look or try something more elegant. Either way, a head scarf  is bound to make you and your hair look good. Are you down with head scarves, but not quite sure how to wear them? Well, don’t worry. We had the lovely Terryl model five ways to wear a head scarf:

You can wear your scarf as a simple headband. To mimic this look, just fold the scarf until you have the desired width you want for your headband. It will be easier if your hair is up when you do this. Then put it where you want it to lie on your head, wrap it around and tie securely underneath. This would look great both with you hair pulled up or with it down as Terryl’s is. This hairstyle used the Summer Breeze Scarf .

This style is done using the Kendra Striped Scarf. Terryl simply wrapped the scarf around her head leaving a thick strip in front and tied it on the side letting the scarf hang down with her hair.

For this style, fold your scarf into a triangle. Wrap it around your head as you would a bandana and tie in the back over your hair. It might be easy if you have someone hold the top of your scarf in place while you tie it tightly in the back, as it easily slips down. This picture features the Amy Nautical Square Scarf.

This style is another one that will be easier to achieve with your hair up while tying, and then you can take it down once its tied. It looks really complicated, but it’s not. Start with the middle of the scarf in the back of your head under your hair. Take it around to the top of your head, cross the two sides and tie on bottom. It creates a really cool look and no one will know how you did it. This style used the Sally Crinkle Scarf.

This style, the rosette, is done using the Shannon Polka Dot Scarf. To achieve this look, wrap the scarf around your head until the two different sides meet. Then, twist the ends together until long and taunt. Next, slowly bring the twist toward your head and allow it to coil as you do so. Tuck, the loose end into the coil and voila!

Though those are only five ways to wear a head scarf, the possibilities are countless. Just get creative with your scarf and let us know if you come up with any cool ideas!
