Scarf Up That Handbag!

Celebrities with scarves on their purses

Is your handbag losing that edge? That burst of style that it once had? Do you envy celebrities like Heidi Montag, Jennifer Anniston or Eva Longoria Parker for their sense of style and fashion?

Well, if you envy Heidi for other reasons besides her purse, then I cannot help you…But if you do dig the above three’s bodacious bags then ladies, you have come to the right place!

Scarves are amazing accessories! Then can add a touch of color to an outfit, dress it up or dress it down and now they can even add a revitalized touch of life to your handbag!

That’s right! Scarfing up your handbag! If you’re looking for that extra oomph then grab a scarf! …Who would have thought that just a little touch of satin color could completely transform your handbag!

Here are some hints:

Stick to leather. If you’re adding some spicy satin scarves to your tote then make it a leather one. Some cloth and hemp purses with scarves appear unorganized and clash.

Go big with color. When adding a scarf to a handbag, go for color! You’re trying to add a bit of sass to your purse anyways, so why not add some spice and make your scarf, handbag and yourself stand out!

Satin and cotton are key. Scarves are made from all arrays of material…Cashmere, cotton, satin, wool, silk…So try to stick to airy materials. Satin and cotton are easy to tie and demonstrate color well. Plus, the last thing you want to do is tie your favorite, yet expensive, cashmere scarf around your purse and then later watch it fly away with the wind when it comes untied…

Do dare to add some color to your handbag. Hell add some crazy pattern even…But do keep it catered to you! Remember you’re adding some flare to your bag, so spice it up however you feel necessary!

A Must Have Combination!

Scarves and Hats CombinedAccessorizing is clutch when it comes to preparing and perfecting an outfit! You have to have the right scarf with the right necklace, with the right earrings and watch. The proper belt and the right colored shoes, the appropriate purse and of course the right head attire…

Dressing can become a complicated matter. It can even get downright confusing! So I have taken it upon myself to research a combination that is always a good fit: scarves and hats. And I am now ready to release this impossible to beat trend to you!

Scarves…colorful, classy, festive and staples for any wardrobe…

Hats…bold, sexy, daring and unique for any wardrobe…

Granted, neither accessory is a requirement when it comes to dressing, but why not dress things up a bit, or down, and add a little flare or spice to that tried and tired wardrobe? The hat-n-scarf combination is a lethal one that packs a two-hit-punch for your outfit.

A Matching Scarf and HatNow here’s a question; do they have to match? Ah, not necessarily…As in, do they need to be carbon copies of each other, I say, NO! I don’t believe that when wearing a scarf and a hat they must be identical in color and pattern…HOWEVER…I do believe that they should have something in common when it comes to style (i.e. colors match, patterns match, material matches, etc.).

Let’s say your scarf and hat are different patterns, but both of them are blue… Then rock it!

Keep in mind you must feel comfortable and confident in what you wear. Honestly, that makes the entire outfit…if you look uncomfortable or miserable then so do your clothes!

So when it comes to accessorizing, keep it simple…You can match your scarf and your hat identically, and you can match them according to color and pattern and you should be confident and comfortable!

Remember, always wear what’s you!

How Long is Your Scarf?

Celebrities in Scarves

How long do you scarf it? You know, when you walk do you trip over it? Does your scarf stay tightly around your neck as if you are choking? Does your scarf hang low? Does it wobble to and fro? Can you tie it in a knot? Can you tie it in a bow? Do you throw it over your shoulder…Sorry…Getting a little carried away…

The question is, when you wear scarves, how long or short should they be? Some prefer shorter, some longer, some EXTREMELY long. What is your preference?

I think a general rule of thumb is don’t choke and don’t trip. Okay seriously, if you’re like me and want cute and comfortable, then I would suggest sticking with a torso length scarf…AKA…It hang to your waist when it is draped around your neck. (Not wrapped, just draped!) My reason for this recommendation, it gives you versatility. You can wrap it around your neck or knot it with ample amounts of scarf left dangling.

If you want to go big and bulky, then darn a large, thick, long scarf. The bulkier the better, in this situation! The longer scarves almost work as shawls and are generally worn as the centerpiece to an outfit. These scarves are generally worn during colder seasons (because of their girth and thickness).

If you want to stay short, then keep it classy and fashionable. Go for the satin or silk colorful scarves, and only wear them around your neck. Add a pop of color to that wardrobe that was missing something. It’s a pinch of sophistication with a dash of bold.

The best answer for which scarf length is the most appropriate is…It’s up to you! It’s your scarf, your outfit, you decide. If you want to go long, then go long! If you want short, rock it short. Either way, the decision is yours. Follow your heart’s style and be proud!

Soccer Scarves: The Ultimate Accessory

Liverpool fans hold up soccer scarvesI’m spending this summer in South Africa. Yep, that’s right. Until July 11th, my roommates and I will be absorbed in a sea of painted faces, animated cheers and sweaty soccer (or should I say, football?) players.

Now I know I’m not the only one who has caught World Cup fever. I also know I’m not the only one wondering about the scarves footie fans love to wear. There’s no better way to show your love for your favorite team (go Italia!) than with a scarf sporting your country’s colors. But where did this phenomenon come from? The answer: Great Britain.

Team scarves first appeared in Britain in the early 1900s. They were designed to allow fans to stay warm in the winter without sacrificing their team spirit. The original soccer scarves were striped, alternating the team’s colors. This style is still the most popular in the UK and Australia. Then came the addition of the club crest and team name, followed by scarves decorated with team slogans and pictures of popular players. Now the possibilities are endless. Scarves are made for important matches, championships and rivalries.

Whether it’s winter or summer, whether the match is in Europe or Africa, scarves are essential for any soccer fan. The ultimate accessory, they are not just for function and fashion. Scarves have become a part of pre-game tradition. Fans will raise their scarves above their heads, creating a scarf wall and a sea of their club’s colors, while singing their team’s anthem. USA fans, this makes you want to put down your foam finger and get an American scarf, doesn’t it?

What team are you rooting for this year? And tell the truth, did you make your choice based on which team has the best scarves?

Bulky or Thin? The Summer Scarf Dilemma!

Everyone has seen the new scarf trend…go big, go bulky, go thin or go home. Period. Scarves are the “it girl” of the year. They’re fun and fashionable! But for summer?! Is it too much?

This is a topic that I have seriously contemplated because I love me some scarves! But, during the summer? So I have taken the time to research, note and watch any fashion medium I could get my hands on…and I have concluded…That scarves really are right for all seasons.

Here’s why…they add flare! They are the most universal accessory, wear them in your hair, around your waist, around your neck…however you choose…but by wearing a scarf, in whatever unique way you desire, you add a touch of flare. A scarf as your headband…different..stands out more than a normal headband?…Can we say, flare?!

But here’s the ultimate question…how much flare is too much? Do we need to rock the bulky scarves? Or is thin in?

My conclusion…Stay versatile, rock both!

The bigger, the more coverage, the more it stands out. The smaller, the less coverage, the more discrete. Granted, color and pattern do make a huge difference, but size makes or breaks your look.

Miami Cotton Scarf

Bulky

If you’re going to go big, then do be wary of your scarf taking over your look. You want it to compliment your outfit, not take away from it.

Abby Striped Scarf

Thin

If you go thin, then make sure your scarf has purpose! Go with a bright color or unique pattern. Make it stand out, make people say, “Wow that’s a cute scarf!” …not, “Why is she wearing a scarf?”

Regardless of going bulky or thin, scarves are in! No matter the season, they add a little extra omph to every outfit! Try it!

Wanna look Parisian? Get a scarf.

At the beginning of May, I was frantically packing for my trip to France. (which started the next day) I had made lists of what I needed and I thought I had everything that is commonly forgotten: toothbrush, camera, socks….you get it. However, there was something I did manage to forget; in fact, my friends seemed to forget this very important article of clothing as well. The fabric that instantly transforms you into a Parisian. SCARVES!

That’s right! None of us remembered to pack a scarf. Not only were we cold everywhere we went, but we stuck out like sore thumbs. I swear to you that everyone except us was wearing a scarf. Good thing we were in the mecca of the fashion world – Paris. So what did we buy first? Scarves. And everyone in our group continued to collect scarves until we made it home. And once we put on our scarves, we instantly looked french.. of course! (okay, not really, but we felt like it)

no scarves in France

There we are on our first night with no scarves. Very sad, no? We were also without hair straighteners, as you can tell, but that’s a whole different fight to battle. This was the time we realized we were going to need to go shopping (In Paris. Bummer, right?) to get scarves.

France scarves

So here we are with our scarves. Of course, we looked tres chic once we had the scarves. Even the scarf on purse look is rockin’.

Even this guy said we looked french. And he was legit. Do you think it was the scarves? Anyway, my moral of the story is that if everyone in France wears scarves, then you probably should too. After all, it is the fashion capital.

Rocking the Scarf

Call me crazy, but I love Aerosmith. More specifically, I love their larger-than-life frontman, Steven Tyler. You know, dude looks like a lady? He knows how to rock, he’s Liv Tyler’s father and he doesn’t take the stage without his iconic scarf-tied microphone stand.

Steven Tyler ties a scarf to his mic stand

Mr. Tyler has been using his trademarked mic since well before I was born, but where did he get such a genius idea? As it turns out, in the early Aerosmith days, he had a favorite scarf he would always wear in his hair. When it started to get worn out (literally) he couldn’t part with his favorite accessory. His solution? Tie it to his microphone stand. And there you have it, ladies and gentleman, the scarf mic stand was born. Sounds like a great decorative use for an old scarf, doesn’t it?

This look has even inspired other artists to put their personality into their microphones. Mariah Carey is all about the glitter mic while Rihanna likes her microphones a little more medieval.

Who knew a scarf could change the face of rock ‘n roll?

Make-Up Mishaps and Your Scarf

We all have done it. You know, come face-to-face, literally, with that wardrobe-damaging, image-tainting, day-ruining…STAIN! Who doesn’t despise finding the worst stain on a perfect outfit?

Picture of Make-Up

And what’s the worst accessory to become stained? Your scarf! Every fabric takes to stains differently: cashmere, silk, wool, cotton, etc. And every style of make-up produces a different stain. Lipstick? Foundation? Blush? Nail polish even? Here’s what does the worst damage and what may erase your problem:

Powder Blushes, Eye Shadows, Bronzers – By far the least of our worries if this light and airy product dispenses itself amongst our starlet scarves. Because this product is a light powder, it should be easy to remove. First rule, do not rub! If you rub the stain in, it will make it worse! Shake it off! Shake it baby, shake it! Other suggestions, vacuum it off (which may be a little harsh for the gentle scarf) or try using a damp duster. If these suggestions don’t work, then see below for other scarf cleaning suggestions.

Liquid Foundation – This can get ugly! This wonderful product is great for your face, but a downfall for your scarf.  It’s oily. Hence, this lovely product sinks into the material, therefore creating a more difficult task for you! When this oily liquid hits your scarf, act fast! Grab the dish soap! …Seriously, dish soap advertises that it cuts grease right? So why wouldn’t it cut it out of your scarf? If this fails, then look below for more suggestions!

Lipstick – Yowza! This beautiful product is brutal on your scarf, no matter what the material. It’s the queen of oil. Don’t rub this mishap, grab the alcohol! (Not the kind that caused you to stain your scarf originally, rubbing alcohol) But be wary of the scarf’s material. Fear damaging your neck décor? Check out below for more stain removing suggestions!

Eye Liner and Lip Liner – We are almost to the worst-of-the-worst stains.  These two products are the worst when it comes to grease! Again grab the alcohol or even baby wipes. But do be cautious of the greasy effects of baby wipes and the damaging effects of alcohol. Didn’t work, try what’s listed below as a back-up..

Nail Polish – The WORST OFFENDER! Avoid this damaging stain as much as possible! If there is an instant spill, freeze it! Then try to peel off the polish.  If it’s set in, grab some nail polish remover. Again, please be gentle! This liquid will eat your scarf. Failed? Try what’s listed below for some more stain lifting potential.

The above failed you?! Not cool…Try chalk, Woolite, Oxy Clean, Dawn Dish Soap, baking soda, rubbing alcohol and nail polish remover. ALWAYS hand wash and thoroughly rinse! Be wary of dry cleaners and never iron the hems of your scarf!

Hooray! Stain removing to the rescue! Do you have an idea that worked for you and it’s not on this site? Let us know!

Best-Dressed at the CFDA Awards

The 2010 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards were held in New York last week. All of the biggest names in fashion were in attendance and dressed to the nines. Now normally I would recap the worst fashion woes but this time (and this time only) I’m going to cut them a break. Instead I’m going to focus on those who deserve a big gold star for their fabulousness:

Rachel Weisz at the 2010

Rachel Weisz, in Jason Wu

How classy is Rachel Weisz? Pretty darn classy, especially in this mini from designer, Jason Wu. Her bright red lips give her a 50′s pin-up girl look that is sassy and sophisticated.
Love. Love. Love!

Devon Aoki at the 2010 CFDA Awards

Devon Aoki, wearing Zac Posen

While it’s true that I may be a little biased towards those who chose a bright red lip color, you can’t deny the fact that Devon Aoki looked completely elegant in this Zac Posen gown.

Dakota Fanning at the 2010 CFDA Awards

Dakota Fanning in Marchesa with shoes by Brian Atwood

Dakota Fanning is growing up right before our eyes. One minute she is starring alongside a cat in a big striped hat and the next she is wowing us in this mini confection by Marchesa. At this rate, the girl will be retired by the time she hits 21!

Sarah Jessica Parker at the 2010 CFDA Awards

Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing Alexander McQueen

When it comes to fashion, Sarah Jessica Parker never seems to disappoint and the CFDA Awards were no exception. This time her bright floral gown even matched the “red” carpet! My only question, how did she not trip over all that fabric? I guess when you’re good, you’re good.

Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2010 CFDA Awards

Gwyneth Paltrow, in Michael Kors

While her ability to choose names for her children may be in question, Gwyneth Paltrow’s ability to choose the perfect dress certainly is not. Paltrow stole the show in this shimmery, one-strap, black gown by Michael Kors.

Who do you think was the best dressed girl at the ball (I mean, awards)?
